5 Reasons You Need a Massage
When was the last time you got a massage? Too long you can’t remember? Maybe you feel it’s too indulgent or you usually wait until you’re holidaying in Bali to treat yourself.
Whatever your reasoning, we’re here to tell you it’s time. Yep! We’re officially giving you permission. There are many reasons to get a massage and it goes way beyond relaxation. So if you need a reason with your permission? We’re giving you 5!
1. You’ve had a stressful year
Well, let’s be honest! 2020 has been a stressful year. We think everyone deserves some TLC and massages are an excellent stress relief. They not only force you to stop, let go and take some time out but if you’re holding tension – and a lot of us do – massages help to release it.
By applying pressure, massage strokes loosen and stretch retracted muscles out. The tension release helps the body relax, reduces pain and improves your mental state. We all feel better without pain, right?
Massages also help to increase blood flow, which can give you a boost in endorphins, serotonin and dopamine – all the feel good chemicals! Hallelujah!
2. You work in an office
Working on a computer all day doesn’t do you any favours. Sitting increases the load on your lower back, and because we tend to push our chin and head forward while looking at the computer (cervical protraction), muscles tighten and weaken, which can result in tension and headaches.
Apart from making healthy changes to the way you work, regular massages help to reverse the negative effects of office posture. It helps stretch out the muscles that cramp up while sitting at the desk and releases tension that has accumulated during the week.
3. You experience chronic pain
Massages go beyond stress and tension relief. They’re also a treatment for chronic pain. There are many conditions that result in recurring pain including arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, inflammation, headache, trauma, and injury.
Chronic pain is obviously hard to live with and requires constant management. Trained remedial massage therapists can target painful areas with specific strokes, enhancing blood flow and removing excess lactic acid from muscles, which helps to alleviate muscle pain.
Many of our chronic pain clients book a massage every 2-4 weeks. They see massage as just another part of their health care plan. It also complements chiropractic care perfectly.
4. You’re recovering from an injury
There’s a reason why every professional sports team has a remedial massage therapist on staff – massage is part of effective injury treatment.
Remedial massage increases blood circulation and delivers more oxygen to soft tissues, which aids in healing. It also stretches out tightness and loosens scar tissue, giving athletes better recovery time.
5. You’re not sleeping well
Do you suffer from insomnia or is stress affecting your quality of sleep? A massage could help. Research shows massage therapy has a positive effect on sleep.
Although it's still unknown exactly how massage improves sleep, experts suspect it’s a culmination of relaxation, tension release, and serotonin that converts into melatonin – the sleep chemical.
Whatever it is, we know after a long remedial massage, we feel very sleepy. And that’s proof enough for us!
Have we convinced you to book your next massage? With all these benefits, we’re sure you’ll thank us for it!
