At Canning Healthcare, we took some time away over the Christmas break and reflected on 2020. What did we achieve? How can we do better?

One of the things that came up in our reflection was making health a priority. As a business and family, we were in survival mode so healthy habits fell by the wayside – not good!

This year, we’re getting back into new habits, and we encourage you to join us. When you feel better, you live better. And often, it’s the little shifts that make all the difference.

But don’t worry, we’re not going to tell you the usual New Year’s resolution goals like “just exercise and eat healthily”. This month, we give you practical health hacks to help you make health a priority this year.

5 Health Hacks to Make 2021 a Healthier Year

1. Work on developing new habits

Want to make some health changes? Why not pick three habits you want to create this year? These habits can be as simple as going to bed earlier or spending less time on your phone. Small changes make a big difference and often have a domino effect on the rest of your life. We recommend only picking three so you don’t get overwhelmed and feel like giving up.

2. Schedule in time for your health

Book in time for your health. Just like you book in meetings at work or catch-ups with friends, book in your gym classes, meal prep and meditation times. Studies show writing something down means you’re more likely to remember it. This will come in handy the next time you’re about to pick up a drink or miss your run. You’ll recall your intention and make a healthier decision.

3.  Invest in an app or device to support you

Technology has had some positive and negative effects on our health. One positive? Helpful apps for fitness, health and wellbeing that motivate you to make positive changes. We’re big fans of Headspace at because it makes meditating accessible. We also love Fitbit. They motivate us to fit more accidental exercise into our day. Think about what you want to improve and find an app to help you achieve it.

4. Keep stress levels down (as much as possible)

Do you get takeaway when you’re feeling stressed? Or find yourself beelining for the bottle-o after a bad day at work? Stress leads to unhealthy decisions. Instead of trying to make better choices when you’re under pressure, make self-care a part of your routine so you don’t get stressed in the first place. Take lots of breaks, meditate, spend time with friends or write your feelings down – whatever works for you. By taking better care of yourself, you’ll have less stress in your life overall and this will help your health overall.

5. Investigate niggling pains and health concerns

Have you had recurring back pain and haven't got around to checking it out? Maybe it’s time to finally see a chiro. Do you have trouble with anxiety or sleeping? Perhaps an appointment with an acupuncturist is on the cards. It’s easy to get used to a particular way of being and forget there’s a better way to live. You’ll be surprised at how long-term problems get resolved with holistic care.

Make 2021 a healthier year! Book an appointment with your local chiropractor, acupuncturist or remedial massage therapist.
