5 Ways to De-stress Over Christmas
2020… what a year! It’s not surprising we’re all feeling a little worse for wear. Although we’ve been extremely lucky as a state, the constant uncertainty, job instability and collective anxiety has affected us all.
Unfortunately, stress triggers chronic conditions and pain symptoms can return. So if your neck or back is feeling more painful than usual or your insomnia has returned, stress may be the culprit.
How does stress affect your health?
Stress causes tension
When you’re feeling stressed, your muscles tighten to protect your body from perceived danger. If the stress is ongoing and you’re unable to release your muscles, you’ll likely experience muscle pain. Many people hold tension in their neck for this reason, hence the need for realignment and remedial massage.
Stress causes insomnia
Trouble sleeping? 2020 has been a trying time for everyone, and it’s triggered a lot of uncertainty. Being unable to switch off at night or frequently waking up is a natural stress response. And unfortunately, insomnia then exacerbates other health conditions such as depression, anxiety and lifestyle diseases.
Stress triggers weight gain
Cortisol and adrenaline release is another reaction to stress. Your heart beats faster to deliver blood to vital organs, and you start producing more sugar for energy. This is a normal reaction, but prolonged chronic stress and the imbalance this creates can lead to the weight gain, adding extra pressure on the body.
Stress causes inflammation
A 2014 study showed psychological stress as a factor behind inflammation during injury recovery, and inflammation slowed down recovery. Inflammation can also result in pain and muscle spasms. So if old symptoms have returned, stress could be the trigger for the recent flare-up.
How can you reduce stress and take care of your health during the break?
Feeling stressed? Why not use the Christmas break to relax and get back to self-care basics.
Slow down
Hopefully, you’re getting a break from work during the Christmas break. If so, take the opportunity to slow down. We know it’s tough with all the parties and catch-ups but after such a stressful 2020, giving your mind and body a break from stressful situations is imperative. Get outside and take a walk. Lay on the beach. Anything that feels relaxing to you.
Increase movement
“But you said to slow down?” Yes, we did, literally one second ago – but hear us out! Stop rushing around but get moving with exercise. If you’ve been neglecting your physical health, the holidays are a great time to get back into making movement a priority.
Start a stretching routine
Too stressed to stretch? If you’re feeling sore, stretching gives it some much-needed attention. And the Christmas period gives you extra time to get back into it. Try a yoga class or do some stretches at home. We’ve provided examples here. Stretching loosens muscles, reduces tension and strengthens your spine.
Give yourself the gift of a massage
Why not buy yourself a massage for Christmas! Feel guilty? Don’t. Just tell yourself you’re investing in your future self – your 2021 self. Massages help to release tension, reduce pain and improve your mental state. They also boost feel-good chemicals – endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.
Start thinking of your health goals for next year
Gone off track this year? Time to reboot and think about how you want to live next year. If old injuries are causing you strife, how are you going to manage them? Have you lost fitness? How are you going to move going forward? Start thinking about how you can make 2021 a healthier one.
